Dear Parent / carer
Re: HIRST WOOD NURSERY SCHOOL PLANNED RE-OPENING 1ST JUNE 2020
Following the announcement earlier this week from the Bradford Local Authority and the fact that we are yet to receive the anticipated guidance on the opening of early years settings from the Department for Education we have made the very difficult decision to NOT open our School to the wider community at the moment. This has been a carefully considered decision, following a rigorous risk assessment and a substantial capital investment by the School in additional health and safety measures. There are various contributory factors that have influenced our decision and these are
- Government advice will be updated at the SAGE committee meeting 28th May and they may decide that it is still remains unsafe to open to other than essential workers
- Confidence that all 5 of the government’s tests are being met locally
- Being clear that the local rate of infection is at manageable levels. This will include an analysis
of the current ‘R’ (reproduction) rate which is currently high in our region
- Being confident that the test, trace and contain programme is working effectively to manage
the local outbreaks of infection
- Ensuring that our risk assessments and safety controls will be effective in maintaining social
distancing and robust hygiene availability of staff to ensure that we can safely maintain group sizes according to social distancing expectations
We hope that you will support us in our endeavours to keep everyone safe. We understand that this may be disappointing to you and your children and we recognise and acknowledge these emotions. We too wish to get back to business as usual and are missing the children and families dreadfully and would have very much enjoyed the opportunity of seeing everyone and having the Nursery full of all your wonderful children. The learning portal will continue to be updated weekly with planning, ideas for you to do at home and we are very much enjoying receiving and sharing your photographs of wide range of experiences that you and your children are doing.
We will remain open to the children of keyworkers and any vulnerable children as we have continually since 23rd March and would ask that you continue to email your requirements on a weekly basis. To date the list of essential workers that government issued in March has not changed, however we will monitor this
situation closely to see if any additional occupations are included and obviously those children will be welcomed. In this respect we are CLOSED for spring bank holiday from Monday 25th to 1st June, normal keyworker childcare will resume Tuesday 2nd June.
We will closely observe the ever changing situation and will review our position mid-June as more information should be available for us to reflect on. We will, of course, maintain regular communication with you and ask you to be patient with us, we are trying to do our very best to support everyone and keep our community safe.
Best wishes to you and your family and we hope that you will support us in this very difficult decision. As always, please get in touch if you need anything, we continue to be here to support you in any way that we can.

Welcome to Hirst Wood Nursery School & Children’s Centre. We value confidence, independence and creativity and experiential learning through purposefully planned play. Everyone at Hirst Wood is valued and every child deserves the very best education. My colleagues and I are totally committed to working in partnership with children and families to extend children’s knowledge and understanding. We are here for you and your child; our aim is to work in partnership to ensure that the learning journey is a special and exciting one – one which will create lasting memories and a drive to know more about the world around them. We are inclusive in all that we do and our learning community is based on the celebration of both similarities and difference and we place high importance on respecting each another. There are no invisible children here.
We have an amazing learning environment that includes a wilderness garden where children have the opportunity to experience the Forest School. We offer a range of enticing and motivating experiences for children both indoors and outdoors to develop their sense of awe and wonder that enables them to take pleasure in exploring and investigating the world around them. Our curriculum is built on a constructivist approach, with children building their own curriculum through our wonderfully enticing and enabling environment. We support children in their delight in discovering and experiencing the world around them which we hope will develop into a lifelong love of learning.
We will shortly be looking at our Easter 2020 intake so if your child is 3 between now and 31st March 2020 do come and look around the Nursery. We offer the free 15 NEF hours in a variety of ways and also the 30 hours for eligible families. Our provision is not only led by very experienced, enthusiastic teachers and Nursery Nurses but alongside this we also have a before and after school club called 'The Sunshine Club' which offers paid for additional sessions. Please make an appointment to come and have a look around our fantastic purpose built historical building in the beautiful world heritage site of Saltaire. Every day is an open day – come and take a look.
Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating from Hirst Wood Nursery School
